Sunnyside

Located to the north of Invesco Field is Sunnyside, an area abundant with 19th century two stories and 1.5 stories resembling ginger bread houses. Because of the proximity to town and the beauty of the homes in the neighborhood, the entire area is quickly becoming one of the better areas to live. ‘Alive’ and ‘diverse’ are good descriptors of the neighborhood. 38th Avenue, Tennyson Street and Federal Boulevard are all hopping with trendy restaurants and convenient shops.

Sunnyside is an area to consider if you’re into living in an established and changing neighborhood. The home prices are still reasonable but are on the rise.

2. The crime index suggests the risk of certain types of crime occuring in this community as compared to the national average. The national average for each type of crime equals a score of 100, so a score of 200 would represent twice the risk as the national average, and a score of 50 would represent half the risk of the naitonal average. About Academia Ana Marie Sandoval: The Dual Language Montessori program at Academia Ana Marie Sandoval is a “marriage” of Dual Language with Montessori Education. Learning two or more languages benefits the individual as well as our society. At Academia Sandoval, we wish to cultivate an atmosphere where it is evident that an equitable and quality education is provided for the community that we serve. Our School Mission Statement speaks to this: Through our Dual Language Montessori program, we provide an equitable and quality education to a diverse community of children.

Our task is to follow the child’s own natural desire to learn. To accomplish this, each environment is carefully prepared, as each is equipped with concrete materials in the areas of Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Math, and Cultural (including Science, Art, Music, Geography). The children choose work based on their interests and move at their own pace, by way of guidance from a trained staff. The social graces are an integral part of the day and assist the child with communication and conflict resolution.

Specific aspects of the program include:
• Instruction that Expects Achievement, Bilingualism and Biliteracy
• Cooperative Learning
• Curriculum in Two Languages (Second Language Acquisition)

Brown Elementary School

Grades: PK-5

Enrollment: 372

Special Features: All-day kindergarten offered; All-day early childhood education offered

About Brown Elementary School: Brown Elementary School is located in the Sloan's Lake neighborhood in Northwest Denver. The students at Brown Elementary School come from a variety of backgrounds. In addition to the students living within walking distance, the school serves students who live in the Salvation Army Lambuth Shelter for Families. Brown is a focus school for the Indian Education Program and thus draws Native American students from surrounding schools. About one fourth of the students are involved in the ELA Program, ESOL or English Language Acquisition Programs.

Brown provides a variety of educational opportunities for the students. Brown Elementary is a looping school, meaning that students and teachers remain together for two years in first and second grade, and fourth and fifth grade. Our third grade team is the only grade level that changes students every year. Through Title I, Brown offers an Early Childhood Education (ECE) program to a growing population of neighborhood children who qualify, and an all-day Kindergarten program funded through the Colorado Preschool Project. In addition, there is a mild/moderate Special Education program and a self-contained ED classroom for Special Education students. Brown services identified Gifted and Talented students with a 1/2 time GT teacher. We are unique because we have the Art Start Program funded through a grant that teaches art and art appreciation to the students one day per month. The school also offers full time music, PE, technology and library programs servicing every student. Brown offers instrumental music lessons, beginning and advanced band, a percussion club, and choir to our students. Brown participates in Jump Rope for Heart, intramural sports for fourth and fifth grade students, Jump Rope Competitions and an outstanding Chess Club. Our computer lab is offering courses for families and parents in the educational use of the Internet, and using the Internet for family literacy.

The Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP) program results for Brown have been disappointing. The percentage of children at the proficient level does not reflect the expectations the school has established for CSAP. Therefore, the assessment results from Brown Elementary are impacting our instructional program in a positive way. We are part of the new district literacy program that empowers our students to become effective learners in school and at home. The staff continually investigates the curriculum and how our instructional strategies can better meet the needs of students.

Fred N Thomas Career Education Center

Grades: 9-12

Enrollment: 277

Special Features: magnet school

About Fred N Thomas Career Education Center: As it was originally known, the Career Education Center, or “CEC,” opened in 1976 as a school that offered a broad assortment of career and technical programs to Denver Public Schools students who spent half day their day at a traditional high school taking academic core classes and a half day at the CEC.

In 1996, the CEC became a diploma granting institution by adding an academic program of its own. In September of 2001, an advisory committee of secondary and post secondary educators, parents, students, school board and business community members set the stage for restructuring by recommending the CEC adopt a middle college model that would provide a seamless transition for students into postsecondary education.

The CEC Middle College of Denver currently has an enrollment of 330 full-time students and 380 part-time students from all of Denver’s comprehensive high schools. The intent of our full-time program is to transition students from high school to college in a supportive environment. Currently, the school serves approximately 120 juniors and seniors who are taking their daily academic classes at the Community College of Denver, (CCD). CEC Middle College students take a combination of career classes at CEC and college classes on the CCD campus.

Students who complete a minimum of basic academic courses and who meet or exceed certain assessment performance levels can enroll in college-level academic and technical courses. Some courses can earn middle college students credit at both the high school and any community college in Colorado.

Academic course offerings for college credit include college algebra or trigonometry, English 121, U.S. History 201, and U.S. History 202. Career course offerings at the middle college include architectural technology, athletic training/sports medicine, audio engineering, automotive technology, automotive body repair and painting, business management, commercial art, construction technology, culinary arts, digital film production, early childhood education, fashion design, fitness trainer, fire science, medical careers, police science, teaching and welding.

CEC Middle College of Denver provides students an opportunity to explore various career fields, while getting a head start on their college careers. Many of our students would not pursue college if this program didn’t exist.

Career programs are taught by professionals in their fields. Program choices are the following: Architectural Drafting, Athletic Training, Audio Engineering, Auto Body, Auto Mechanics, Business, CISCO networking, Commercial Art, Construction, Criminal Justice/Police Science, Culinary Arts, Digital Film Production, Early Childhood and Elementary Education Careers, Electrical, Fashion Careers and Clothing Design, Fire Science, Fitness Trainer, Keyboard Musicianship/Composing & Arranging, Med Prep, and Welding. These programs are offered to full time and part time students.

Special Features:

About Horace Mann Middle Schoo: Horace Mann Neighborhood Center School, located in northwest Denver, was built in 1931 and serves approximately 650 students during the day and more than 400 families during the extended-day. A recent Northwest Area Support Specialist Site visitation conducted in September, 2002, stated: "The faculty and staff are working in unison, with a positive perspective and a well defined plan. There is a positive school environment with camaraderie, support, communication and respect for learning. The entire staff has a positive outlook and consider Horace Mann a positive place to be. In the past 5 years, this school under Principal Jim Trevino has become a learning community with a positive outlook on student achievement." Horace Mann was given a commendation for school improvement planning and student achievement. In addition, we have earned a distinction of having exceptionally strong character/leadership education, Gifted and Talented/History Day activities, music education, and technology programs.

For many years, our students have won History Day awards at the local and state levels, leading to competition in Washington. Also, innovative reading and writing strategies have been implemented through ongoing staff development in the area of Step-Up-to-Writing. With the addition of the Studio Course Literacy Program and the Connected Math Program, Horace Mann has high expectations to continue the trend established with the 2002 CSAP Reading and Math standardized evaluations which demonstrated an increase in student achievement.

Our teacher teams work with common groups of students and parents in a school-wide "Partnership Agreement" which creates a comprehensive educational program designed to foster high performance and increased achievement. Classes in drama, academic clubs, DU tutors program, Middle Lift Leadership classes, Quest Self-Exploration Through Art, Pre-Collegiate Program, and the Earn-and-Learn computer program all enhance this program.

North High School

Grades: 9-12

Enrollment: 1349

Special Features:

About North High School: North High School is located in northwest Denver. We serve neighborhood children in grades 9 through 12, and children throughout the city in our Computer Magnet. Our enrollment has remained fairly constant over the last 3 years, but is expected to gradually increase as the Computer Magnet expands. We serve the diverse educational needs of our children, many of whom deal with challenging circumstances. Challenges we face are: 83.5% mobility, 69.1% free and reduced lunch, 24% limited English proficient, an increase in Special Education students, an increase in the number of students with single parents, many of whom work two jobs. It should be noted that when 9th graders enter North, the majority are at least two grade levels behind in reading, writing and math.

Despite the challenges we face, North continually makes gains in the achievement of our students on standardized tests. Specifically: By the 11th grade, students are reading at an average grade equivalency of 11.6 and have a written expression of 11.1. The total math quantitative is 10.5 by the 11th grade. La Prueba testing shows that all ELA students are above the national average.

To continue to improve student achievement in our school we are doing the following: We have implemented a Pepper Committee which has developed a new schedule. This schedule is based on an eighteen week semester with three days a week when all classes meet and two days a week when classes are blocked. This schedule also includes an access period, when students receive tutoring and enrichment in their classes. The pepper Committee has a Routines sub-committee working on attendance, tardies, enrichment, and the day-to-day activities of North High School. This year, North has developed a Leadership team working on improving student achievement. We continue to have a Project Based Learning Team for 9th and 10th grade students; an Interactive Math Program, after school math tutoring; 9th grade teams for all entering Freshmen; a commitment to integration of technology in the classroom and through the Computer Magnet; and a school wide plan to reduce the dropout rate and increase the graduation rate.

Remington Elementary School

Grades: PK-5

Enrollment: 350

Special Features: All-day kindergarten offered; All-day early childhood education offered

About Remington Elementary School: Remington Elementary School is located in northwest Denver serving Early Childhood Education (ECE) through fifth grade. We offer a strong academic program utilizing three district initiatives: Everyday Math, the Denver Public Schools Elementary Literacy Program and the Denver Public Schools Workgroup on Transition and English Language Development (Transitional English instruction for those students moving from Spanish into English). We support the literacy program with a Colorado Reading First grant, Reading Recovery grant and Read to Achieve funding sources. Remington has recently seen increases in our students' CSAP (Colorado Student Assessment Program) scores. These increases are a result of increased student expectation, student CSAP preparation, staff development, and increased teacher productivity. We have revitalized our school around the Core Knowledge research-based approach and expect to see continued gains in student achievement due to this programmatic alignment. Teachers will attend weekly training with an in-school literacy coach and math coach with a focus on independent reading, writer's workshop, English language development and Everyday Math. Classrooms are using individual conferences and small-group instruction for reading as well as giving students time to practice independently and in learning stations. We believe in a family approach to education. For parents, we hold a monthly coffee with the principal, where parents can discuss concerns and upcoming events. We also have Family Activity Nights. We offer Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classes through our partnership with EVENSTART and the Strengthening Families Curriculum though our partnership with LARASA (Latin American Research and Service Agency). We have a neighborhood walk each year; teachers visit their students, meet their families and deliver school supplies. Additionally, many parents volunteer in our classrooms and are assisting in a community project for our new Learning Landscape playground. We believe all students can learn, and we are working to implement a caring community where all children achieve their potential.

Skinner Middle School

Grades: 6-8

Enrollment: 633

Special Features:

About Skinner Middle School: Diverse, historic Skinner Middle School, located in northwest Denver, concentrates on and demonstrates academic success. Our staff includes professionals with a wide range of talents: artists, authors, scientists, and technology specialists, among others. Our primarily Latino student population includes over one-fifth Spanish-only and Spanish-English speakers in our English Language Acquisition program. In addition, two special programs for emotionally and adaptively disabled children contribute to the diversity of our building.

Under a revitalization plan, Skinner Middle School has added several new programs including AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), “X” Track for advanced placement and credit, all under the umbrella of an Integrated Arts Program.

The Integrated Arts Program at Skinner Middle School is grounded in the belief that all students have the right to equitable access to the arts and to high expectations and opportunities for learning in their lives and in their schools. The arts are important for young people not only as a means of enlivening and deepening overall learning, but also as valuable experiences in their own right. The arts teach learners to know themselves as capable citizens in a democratic society – observing, creating, reflecting, making choices, and taking responsibility for actions in the world. The arts are fundamental to the development of life-long learners capable of self-expression, critical thinking, problem solving, and understanding of others.

The integration of arts into the DPS Studio, Social Studies, Science and Math curricula enable students to participate in active learning, teachers to participate in curricular design and “all” to benefit from the arts. Integration of instruction between content areas enables students to draw connections and teachers to participate in collegial professional development. Partnerships with artists, the arts community, and philanthropic groups assist in developing the academic abilities and character of our middle-age youngsters.

Smedley Elementary School

Grades: PK-5

Enrollment: 409

Special Features: All-day kindergarten offered; All-day early childhood education offered

About Smedley Elementary School: Smedley Elementary School has a rich history. A century of service to the community was celebrated in May 2002. Our beautiful red schoolhouse was built in 1902 and was named after the superintendent, Dr. William Smedley. To this day, the Smedley family continues to support our school.

We are the Smedley “Stars”. Our 485 students enjoy a rich curriculum. Students look to their teachers to provide a quality learning environment. All this occurs in a warm, nurturing atmosphere that values the gifts of culture, language and traditions that are a part of the family and community life of our students. The district literacy program, math problem-solving techniques and science are enriched through weekly experiences in art, physical education, drama and vocal music. More than 50% of our classroom instruction is offered in Spanish. Within the three kindergarten sessions at Smedley, two are extended-day for children identified as needing additional support. Academic help is also provided through gifted and talented opportunities, mild/moderate special education and school-wide Title I support.

During a leadership transition, our staff is developing a clear vision and mission to maintain a united instructional focus. We have embraced the challenge to improve our CSAP scores by providing ongoing teacher training, child-centered instruction and increased parental involvement.

At Smedley we believe that all children can learn and will prosper in a warm, welcoming environment.

Valdez Elementary School

Grades: PK-5

Enrollment: 434

Special Features: All-day kindergarten offered; All-day early childhood education offered

About Valdez Elementary School: Valdez Elementary School is a neighborhood school located in the northwest Denver Highland community. Our community has many strengths as well as issues that impact Valdez children and their families. The student population is comprised of 96.1 % Hispanic, 2.4 % white, and 1.5 % other. Seventy four percent of our students are Second Langauge Learners and receive English language acquisition services. Our mobility rate is 124.7% and the percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced-price lunch is 98%. Our school-based health clinic provides basic health care and our mental health therapist provides individual and family counseling.

Valdez is a former Collaborative Literacy Project (CLP) school and now actively participates in the Denver Public Schools Literacy Project, a balanced reading, writing, and language program. The growth as a result of our efforts is encouraging and the continuity of instruction is evident throughout the school. The common belief that all children can learn has permeated the building, and literacy has become a way of life. The Valdez staff holds high expectations for all students. Scores on state tests, ITBS and CSAP, indicate a steady increase in reading in each of the six years as a CLP school and last year under the DPS Literacy Program.

Although we continue to show improvement in our test results, we are not where we need to be nor have we achieved the goals that we hope to attain. Through the school wide implementation of the DPS Literacy Program we will continue with our concentrated literacy efforts, including assessment-driven, standards-based instruction for all students, and ongoing staff development. In addition, our math emphasis will continue to be a major focus for instruction and staff development. Valdez will continue with our present tutoring programs and implement the Read to Achieve Sylvan at School after-school reading program for 2nd and 3rd grade ILP students in an effort to close the gap between higher and lower achieving students.

As reflected in press-reported state test scores, our school continues to make clear progress in achievement of all our children. Valdez is determined to raise achievement for all students.
