Baker
South Broadway all the way up to Colfax Ave is an area that has been transitioning to a feeling that of West Washington Park. It is now prime for any type of individual to move in and be comfortable. A historic neighborhood, Baker has some of the most magnificent Victorians and Queen Annes, some of which resemble ginger bread houses. With dedicated urban renewal, Broadway is now home to scores of galleries, bars, boutiques and bookstores, including the independent Mayan theater, the Hornet Bar and Grille, Decade and the retro and rockin’ Skylark. With residents that are committed to keeping Baker historic, beautiful and happy, this ethnically diverse, yet quiet neighborhood is a new house-hunting hotspot.
Baker is a great spot for both singles and those with families due to the moderate dollar per square foot and the fantastic location. Crime is relatively low, however, so are the public school CSAP scores.

1. Source: Zillow. Neighborhoods represented by more than one zip code reflect the average of all zip codes.
2. The crime index suggests the risk of certain types of crime occuring in this community as compared to the national average. The national average for each type of crime equals a score of 100, so a score of 200 would represent twice the risk as the national average, and a score of 50 would represent half the risk of the naitonal average. Neighborhoods represented by more than one zip code reflect the average of all zip codes.

About Godsman Elementary School: Godsman's student population of 560, Early Childhood Education through Grade 5, is varied in its instructional needs with 47% English Language Learners, 65% Reading Improvement, 10% Gifted/Talented, and 6% Special Education. To meet these challenges our Collaborative Decision-Making Committee (CDM) designed multi-aged classrooms that are structured to focus on reading, writing, and math without pullout programs. Teachers have established a community of professional development to implement the DPS Literacy Plan to meet the unique learning needs of their students. In every classroom, students experience a three-hour Literacy Block which includes direct instruction in reading and writing and 45 minutes of independent reading. Teachers confer with students individually so as to gear whole-group instruction.
Godsman's goal is entitled "Mission To A Million," which focuses on assuring that all students read a million words each year. Math instruction now utilizes the Everyday Math program that provides the framework for math classes. Additionally, students routinely participate in Visual Arts, Physical Education, Music, and Library. Parent involvement is seen in homework checks, Partners-in-Print Meetings, volunteers, parent-teacher communication, Parent Education/Pre-school, and fund raising. Godsman is the school where all students come to learn and make friends.

About Goldrick Elementary School: Goldrick Elementary School is located in southwest Denver and serves approximately 630 students in Early Childhood Education (ECE) through fifth grade. Of those students, approximately 50% are second-language learners. Our goal is to enhance student achievement, and our key focus is on standards-based literacy and math skills. Goldrick is a Professional Development Partner School with the University of Colorado at Denver. University students complete internships at Goldrick to fulfill licensure requirements by working directly in classrooms with teachers, individuals and small groups. Additionally, Goldrick participates in the new Denver Public Schools Literacy Program. This program is based on the belief that intelligence can be achieved through effort, regardless of circumstances. This fundamental belief will benefit our students, regardless of their backgrounds, and strengthen the proposition that all children can learn. At Goldrick all students in grades 1-5 participate in a three-hour, uninterrupted literacy block. One of the components of the literacy program is to ensure all students read independently with books that are tailored toward their interests and their reading level. Each classroom has an extensive library to support the students with their independent reading. Furthermore, Writer's Workshop allows students to write at least 45 minutes a day. All classes K through 5 are supported with a literacy paraprofessional. First graders with additional literacy needs participate in the Reading Recovery Program. Goldrick's goals for the school year are: to continue to improve reading and writing performances on standardized (CSAP-Colorado Student Assessment Program) and individual assessments; increase math skills by demonstrating a minimum of one year's growth in all grade levels; and maintain attendance rate and improve targeted students' attendance.

Jacob Schmitt Elementary School
Grades: PK-5
Enrollment: 440
Special Features: All-day kindergarten offered; All-day early childhood education offered
About Jacob Schmitt Elementary School: Jacob Schmitt Elementary School, built in 1954, flanked by Ruby Hill Park and the Platte River, provides the children of its southwest Denver neighborhood with the opportunity to learn from a staff of experienced (16.5 average years of experience), well-educated professionals: 93% of our staff has completed some post-graduate work, and 54% hold Master's degrees.
Rich in diversity, nine different languages are spoken by the students in our school. We serve our diverse population by offering bilingual, sheltered English and English as a Second Language services by our faculty and staff, 24% of whom speak a second language, and 75% of whose teachers are specially trained to teach children who speak more than one language.
Challenges abound in public schools, and Schmitt is no exception: we have a mobility rate of 87% and a 128% increase in the number of students needing special education services. The number of students who need to learn English while mastering reading, writing, math, science and social studies increases ever year.
We are encouraged that our CSAP reading scores have shown growth for three years, that our CSAP writing scores have improved by 11 points over that time, and our CSAP math scores have increased by 4 points in the first two years of that assessment. Further, scores are significantly (20% or more) higher for students who have remained at Schmitt for three consecutive years than students who were educated elsewhere.
We are the only school in Denver to provide its fifth-graders with a four-day class trip to Mesa Verde every spring. Employees from Vectra Bank and Janus Funds work with us to provide a real-life curriculum in economics. Teachers work with faculty from the Public Education and Business Coalition in study groups and model classroom sessions to keep abreast of best practices in reading, writing and math instruction.
Other strategies for improvement include teacher inservices in best educational practices; assistance from our lead teacher in implementation of these practices; a read-at-home literacy program; and extra resources dedicated to small-group-after-school tutoring in reading and writing.
We seek to educate all of our students, regardless of special needs, in ways that incorporate the best academic instruction and individual attention that we can provide so that Schmitt Elementary students will become confident, independent learners for the rest of their lives.
