Park Hill

Park Hill’s popularity as a residential neighborhood is derived from it’s convenient location. It’s a ten minute drive from downtown and is just south of I-70. Up until the early 1990’s Park Hill was burdened by Stapleton International Airport which sat just to the east of this neighborhood. Although this neighborhood was platted in the late 1890’s as an escape from the Wild West of current day downtown, it sat right under the flight path. With the construction of Denver International Airport and the change of Stapleton to a residential area, Park Hill has the glorious Tudors and Queen Annes that make this neighborhood a one-of-a-kind in Denver without the jet engine noise.

Park Hill is a special neighborhood. It has the classic ‘Mayberry, USA’ feel with the most mature trees in the city and the beautiful two-stories. It also has some of the best neighborhood retail centers in the city along 23rd Avenue. If you’re ever in the mood for a great slice of pie and a latte, Adagio’s Bakery is a must! The neighborhood is an ideal family location with oversized homes on big lots. The diversity is unbeatable, and Park Hill Elementary is one of the best elementary schools in the city.

2. The crime index suggests the risk of certain types of crime occuring in this community as compared to the national average. The national average for each type of crime equals a score of 100, so a score of 200 would represent twice the risk as the national average, and a score of 50 would represent half the risk of the naitonal average. About Philips Elementary School: Philips Preparatory School serves students in Park Hill and the surrounding area with an Early Childhood Education (ECE) through grade-five program. We offer before-school activities on Tuesdays and Thursdays and through the benefit of several grants, we have been able to achieve small class sizes for our students. In addition, we offer reading assistance support for all of our primary grades. We offer a full-day Early Childhood Education program and a full-day kindergarten program. Our staff has created a warm, nurtured and structured learning environment that supports student achievement. Our curriculum includes the Denver Public Schools Elementary Literacy Block, Everyday Math, physical education, arts, computers, social studies, science, and library. Students participate in Challenge and gifted and talented programs through regular class activities, as well as through community-based projects and Denver Public Schools competitions. The Collaborative School Committee (CSC) and Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) sponsor quarterly programs for parent/community involvement designed to promote student achievement, and we have added the Assets for Youth and Olweus (bully-proof) programs to further support student achievement. To address the critical issue of low to moderate standardized test scores, we have implemented after school tutoring, a reading specialist (“Read-to-Achieve"), and Whiz Kids programs. Smith Elementary School

Grades: PK-5

Enrollment: 392

Special Features: All-day kindergarten offered; All-day early childhood education offered; uniforms

About Smith Elementary School: Smith Renaissance School of the Arts provides unique opportunities for students in the arts, while maintaining a strong focus on academic achievement. Technology is incorporated across curricula areas to enhance student achievement. Additionally, enrichment opportunities are provided for those students who test within the gifted and talented range. Maximizing the potential of all students and ensuring that they have the skills to meet the state content standards is the primary focus for the Smith community.

Smith staff members are committed to the improvement of reading, writing, and math skills. Headstart and Colorado Preschool Project provided two full day and two half-day preschool classes to insure that students would enter kindergarten ready to learn. Amendment 23 funds were used for three full day kindergarten classes. Title I funds were used to provide two full time teachers to work with students to improve reading and writing skills, as well as support to classroom teachers in their improvement of instruction, and a half-time teacher to work with small groups to increase math achievement. Before-school tutoring was also provided for students in reading. Programs to enhance student achievement included: Project Read with the Denver Nuggets and Avalanche, Young Author's Conference, Chess Club, and Mathletics.

CSAP reading scores for 3rd grade improved significantly with more than a 50% growth in the number of students achieving at the proficient level. CSAP Writing was also an area of strength across grade levels with most of the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students scoring within the partially or proficient ranges. However, 4th and 5th grade reading and 5th grade math declined. These are major concerns. A strategic plan is being developed in conjunction with staff and parents to increase the number of students scoring at the proficient levels.

On the artistic side, Smith students performed for a number of community events, had art work displayed at the Art Museum, created ornaments for Colorado State Christmas tree in Washington, D.C., and participated in classes with the Colorado Ballet and the Colorado Youth Symphony.
