Montclair
If you’re looking for a classic Denver neighborhood, look no further! Montclair was established circa 1890 by none other than the Red Barron, Barron Von Richtoffen. Montclair is a fabulous mixture of old and beautiful Victorian style houses and 1940-1950’s brick ranches. It truly has the all-American feel with a warm community of neighbors and a flourishing atmosphere. The main thoroughfares of Montclair include Monaco Parkway, 6th Avenue and Colfax. If you’re interested in a neighborhood that has a pride of ownership, look no further.
Montclair generally has brick ranches with two-to-four bedrooms. These homes were built from 1930-1955. There is also a fabulous Historic District that boasts large Victorian two-stories that were built as early as 1880. Montclair Park has one of the most historic structures in Denver, the Mulkery. Once an insane asylum, it is now a fully-restored community center. Look for our Halloween Parties at the Mulkery!
A home in Montclair is very reasonably priced and will run you from $150,000 to $350,000 for the average home. Historic homes will generally go for $500,000 and up. In addition, Montclair is experiencing the ‘scrape’ phenomenon where homebuilders will come in and take off the existing home and build a new home on top of the existing plot of land. These properties are custom homes and are fantastic!

2. The crime index suggests the risk of certain types of crime occuring in this community as compared to the national average. The national average for each type of crime equals a score of 100, so a score of 200 would represent twice the risk as the national average, and a score of 50 would represent half the risk of the naitonal average. Neighborhoods represented by more than one zip code reflect the average of all zip codes.

About Ashley Elementary School: Ashley has an ECE program, regular and extended-day kindergarten programs as well as bilingual classrooms through the 5th grade. Ashley staff is currently implementing the District Literacy Blocks, which will provide expanded opportunities for students in these areas. We also have a full-time science teacher and math coach. The science position, as well as that of our math coach who also targets small groups of students, is made possible through an on-going partnership between Ashley Elementary and Colorado Studios Mountain Mobile and Minor Brown, Inc. Ashley students also receive on-going support from Forest City, an integral part of the Stapleton Re-development Project.
The staff at Ashley is enhanced by additional personnel, which include two literacy coaches, a full-time counselor, a full-time nurse, a math coach, a Gifted & Talented teacher, and an Administrative Assistant who all assist in the academic success of the students.
Ashley's staff engages in professional staff development regularly both in and out school. For example, 4th and 5th grade teachers are currently being trained in the District’s new approach to teaching math and the Principal, literacy coaches, and the ESL teacher continue to receive on-going training in reading and writing strategies. In addition, the literacy coaches also provide weekly staff development to the teachers who are implementing the literacy blocks in their classroom. During the coming academic year all staff will be receiving training in technology in order to learn how to integrate it into their classrooms.
Finally, the staff at Ashley is working on ways to improve the information that parents get about what their children know and can do. We want all parents to be full partners in their children’s learning and hope that an expanded report card will help them be better equipped to do so.

Carson Elementary serves a culturally diverse population of students in the Hilltop, Crestmoor, and Mayfair neighborhoods. The school's instructional model consists of ECE through Grade 5. We offer Tuition-Based Early Childhood Education and Extended Day Kindergarten, English Language Acquisition, Gifted and Talented and Special Education Support. Child care is also offered through the Kaleidoscope Before/After School program during the school year.
All students are engaged in the district's literacy plan and we are focused on high academic achievement. Everyday Math is used to build problem solving skills and develop better math thinkers. Students participate in drama, music, visual arts, physical education, and library, and students have access to computers in Carson's computer lab as well as in the classroom.
Carson is also proud to be the Auditory/Oral Center School for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. This program provides services for students who need to be in a self-contained classroom. The students work with a highly qualified staff of teachers who are trained to work with students who are deaf or hard of hearing. As students become ready, they are mainstreamed into traditional education classes. Our deaf or hard of hearing students are included in every facet of Carson and integrate with the total student body. At Carson we have high expectations for all students. These students participate in all academic assessments given to students at the school, district or state level.
Additionally, we serve students who have been identified as Highly Gifted or High Achieving. Students are qualified through the district’s Gifted and Talented office. Although the students receive their academic instruction in self contained classrooms, opportunities are provided for students to work and learn together with students in other classes. Every effort is made to integrate the Highly Gifted/High Achieving students with the total student body.
Carson has a strong Collaborative School Committee that works to maintain high academic standards. CSAP state test scores show that Carson's students have continued to make steady gains over the years. Instructional strategies include school-wide emphasis on Reading and Writing Workshops. Our goal is to provide maximum learning opportunities that enable all students to attain the best education possible. Commitment, dedication and high expectations in achieving Colorado content standards make Carson an excellent neighborhood school and school-of-choice.

About Denver School of the Arts: The Denver School of the Arts, the only comprehensive arts magnet in the Rocky Mountain region, provides 670 students, grades 6-12, the opportunity to grow academically and to develop their artistic talents. Students are admitted to the school based solely on their audition in the arts major of their choice: video cinema arts, creative writing, dance, instrumental music, stagecraft design, theatre, visual art and vocal music. Students sign a contract to maintain a 2.25 grade point academic average and a 3.0 art major average in order to stay at DSA. About Montclair Elementary School: Montclair Elementary School is located in northeast Denver's Historic Montclair Neighborhood. Although we are a small school, we take great pride in providing a wide range of opportunities for our diverse student population. We nurture the whole child by offering PE, music, library and a gifted and talented program. This is our sixth year of an Artist-in-Residence program, which has included art, dance, poetry and drama opportunities for our students.
Montclair has an intensive English Language Acquisition (ELA) program in place to assist in the transition of our immigrant population. Twelve languages other than English are spoken by these students. An ESOL teacher on staff also provides support for many of these children and their families. Every spring, Montclair hosts a school and community Multicultural Fair to highlight and celebrate this diversity.
Montclair is working very hard to address the economic and social stresses facing our population, where 85% of our students are eligible for free/reduced price lunches. Language and cultural differences impact parent participation as well as academic performance. High mobility rates are also a factor. We recognize the challenges facing our students and are constantly striving to find ways to improve our CSAP scores. Some changes we have made include emphasizing smaller primary class size and a full-day Headstart program. We also provide a weekly Community Study Hall and the Summer Scholars Summer Reading Program. To support our literacy focus, we have a full-time Literacy Coach and a full-time Read-To-Achieve teacher. Their primary responsibilities are to increase the reading and writing skills of students in grades kindergarten through fifth and to provide resource help for teachers in the area of literacy. One paraprofessional has been trained to implement the District's Comprehensive Literacy Program and to work with the primary grade students. We have increased library services for our students by hiring a full-time Library Technician.
In cooperation with Safe Schools, the Healthy Students Initiative and the Community School Assistance Team, we have additional support to help our students and families. A full-time counselor is available to work with our students and their parents on a daily basis. We believe we are very fortunate to have so much skill and expertise within our faculty and staff to serve Montclair students and families. We are a community of learners, striving for excellence, as we collaboratively nurture minds, bodies and spirits.

About Whiteman Elementary School: Whiteman School serves children from a large geographic area in Northeast Denver. Whiteman students come from the former Lowry Air Force Base, apartment buildings along the Aurora border, and the immediate neighborhood.
Approximately 20% of Whiteman students' primary language is not English. These students speak one of nine different languages as they have immigrated to the United States from eight different countries. An extensive English Language Acquisition program is in place to teach children whose first language is not English. Federal law designates that some of the former Air Force housing on LAFB be used to house homeless families. At Whiteman, children of families in transition are provided an Educational Outreach Program to help develop literacy, math, and homework skills. The realities of high mobility, language differences, and factors of poverty have affected Whiteman's school-wide scores on the Colorado Student Assessment Program. As Whiteman's special programs address these needs, improvements can be expected.
Whiteman serves many children who perform at or above grade level on both the CSAP and the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. Instructional grouping within classrooms and grade levels assures that children are taught at their appropriate levels. An active Challenge Program for gifted and talented students, and enrichment classes including Spanish, Shakespeare Festival preparation, choir, chess club, science club, student council, journalism, and after school sports provide a well-rounded educational environment.
Whiteman's staff is involved in ongoing staff development to expand their knowledge to enhance the educational opportunities for the children. The public is invited to visit our school to observe Whiteman's many fine programs.
